A year ago, it was hard to imagine that Ethereum’s real competitors would appear on the decentralized application market, but this happened. The TRON and EOS cryptocurrencies have launched Dapp platforms, on the basis of which hundreds of applications work, but will they remove Ethereum from the throne? In this article, you will learn the opinion of developers on this subject, the course of the media war and the current distribution of forces.
Media war of Buterin, San, and Larimer
There are still a few smart contracts and blockchain programmers compared to the number of developers of classic trends, so the struggle for masters of computer code in the field of cryptocurrencies begins. You can win it by providing more convenient conditions for encoding or by convincing programmers of the shortcomings of competitors.
The first to speak was the founders of the cryptocurrencies TRON and EOS, Justin Sun and Daniel Larimer.
Even at the ICO stages, without a finished product, Larimer promised that developing Dapp on EOS would be easier by using the C ++ programming language. Soong, in turn, touted the good old Java language and teased Buterin. Vitalik did not remain silent and hinted at the plagiarism of the White Paper cryptocurrency TRON and the mismatch between TRX capitalization and its achievements (there was no finished product at that time).
The ETH and EOS cryptocurrency war did not end in words. The Ethereum network was forced to endure a sharp increase in prices for commissions to miners (gas) for the deployment of a smart contract to the main network. As the investigation showed, the most likely culprit was the account associated with EOS.
The action is ugly, but the fraud clearly showed the flaws in Ethereum in scalability, which were already manifested before. Buterin’s competitors worked not only to compromise a more powerful rival but also intensified themselves. So, the TRON platform bought BitTorrent and killed two birds with one stone: it gained a large number of users and signed an experienced team of developers of distributed applications.
The ICO stages of both projects were completed, after which tools for developing decentralized applications were released. In the spring, the first EOS programming lessons began to appear, but the TRON Dapp platform was officially launched only in October 2018. As a result, the first programming tutorials on the Throne blockchain appeared just two months ago.
Continuing the struggle for the number of applications, Justin Sun tweeted a loud statement. He wrote that he would create an Ethereum and EOS application recovery fund to help them migrate to the TRON blockchain.
Twitter agency Weiss Ratings defended Buterin and Larimer, pointing out the small size of the TRON cryptocurrency community and the inappropriateness of such statements.
Now it’s time to put aside conversations and compare blockchain platforms according to two characteristics:
- Developer reviews.
Feedback from programmers about EOS, Ethereum, and TRON
A large number of blockchain developers agree that it is easier to learn examples of smart contracts and plunge into the development of decentralized applications with the Ethereum platform since a huge number of guides have been released for it. The best self-study site for Solidity is CryptoZombies from the Loom Network.
- Ethereum Due to the established industry, it is ideal for creating tokens (ERC-20), ERC-721 projects (CryptoKitties), but not very large-scale and complex. For the rest, it’s very difficult to do any complex projects now. Ethereum has serious technical limitations: the POW consensus, the concept of the gas itself, the immutability of contracts.
- EOS. A very functional platform that allows you to do fairly complex projects, this is facilitated by the possibility of updating contracts (if a critical bug is found, it is easier to fix it), but the high cost of memory and the damp environment still cause difficulties.
- TRON. Few worked with this platform, and it was not possible to find a programmer’s review. From the lessons available at the moment, we can conclude that the development on the TRON blockchain is very similar to Ethereum, especially in terms of supporting the “heavy and incomprehensible” Solidity and TRC-20 tokens – ERC-20 counterparts.
In general, if the project is not an ICO with a token, then programmers advise to aim at EOS or even look at other alternatives, which we will discuss at the end of the article.
DappRadar Application Statistics
This site tracks applications on the three most popular Blockchain Dapps: ETH, EOS, and TRON. By the number of programs, Ethereum is forecasted to be the leader – only 1348, of which more than 230 are visited every day. In second place is EOS: 269 Dapp, of which there are 156 visits. Closes the top three TRON: 107 programs, 70 of which are with users.
According to the volume of capitalization of smart contracts for 7 days, TRON has the best performance – $ 258 million, 232 of which are provided by the TRONbet application. The second line is occupied by EOS – $ 186 million. At the last position in the ranking by ETH capitalization – only $ 14 million.
In the rating by transaction volume, the sole leader is EOS – 20 million TX. The second place behind the Tron is 8.6 million TX, 6 of which the TRONbet application. The volume of ETH cryptocurrency transactions in the programs in question does not even reach a million.
The last criterion for comparing blockchain platforms for Dapps is a list of new applications. Of the 44 New programs, 21 were created on the air, 15 on EOS, 8 on the Throne. It is better to draw a conclusion on the analysis of statistics after a time when the artificial pumping of indicators stops. In general, the parameters confirm the competitiveness of EOS and TRON.
Alternative Dapp Platforms
Cryptocurrencies NEO, Qtum, Cardano or the Hyperledger Fabric project also claim their market share. The success of the alternatives is not so great. For example, NEO does not even have 50 working applications. Cardano, who only released the SDK in Rust in October, has high expectations. Given the activity of the team of programmers, this year we can rightly expect the appearance of applications in the Cardano sidechains and a full-fledged Dapp ADA browser.
